Find your Warrior Pose in Real Estate
Real Estate is the type of business that
can drive you crazy, stress you to the limit, and soak up as much personal time
as you allow it. It’s not a dig on the industry, it simply the nature of it.
I began to feel it making a
negative impact on what I could give to my team, it was time to make some
changes.. So I ventured down the road to a Yoga studio.
Since that point, yoga has become a place
of empowerment and reflection. One that has provided my brain a calm,
clarity, confidence, and sort of grounding. It has become a factor in my
staying power in the real estate industry.
After a recent class, I was thinking just
how much the two have in common when it was comes to growing your business.
Mindset: Setting your mind each day on what you plan to
accomplish in your real estate practice places a vibration out in the universe
that says you are ready to work. You are prioritizing your mindset to
follow through and accomplish those goals.
The same is true in yoga class. We stop
and create a mindset to get through the class, each step builds that confidence
to improve your strength, breath and pose.
Fail and Start Over: In real estate we teach to be
consistent and have a structured system to build your business.
However, through the shear numbers of people you need to meet in real
estate, it can become overwhelming. Selling a home, creating a new business
model in a shifting market means you have to leave your ego at the door and be
open to failing, learning and of-course succeeding.
As we enter the yoga class, we certainly
leave the ego at the door. If you have ever tried a head stand or the
warrior pose, then you are going to fail/fall and you have to be comfortable
with it. Really who likes a plank!
In both instances showing up and being
present is half the battle. Willing to twist yourself about, trying to find
your balance at the risk of looking uncoordinated. You are where you are, so
just be there and do your best. If you fall over, who cares? You tried,
allowing your muscles and mind to stretch further, and are willing to take
risks in a safe place... A mindful metaphor for your real estate business
indeed.
In the event it all becomes too much,
simply move into a resting pose for a moment until you regain your stride. Much
like in real estate, we all need a breather from time to time. When the signs
of burnout creep in, there’s much to be gained from stepping back, recognizing
your need to rest, and centering yourself again.
A Beginners Mind: There’s a state experienced Yogi’s strive
called Beginners Mind; that wonderful space of unknowing, openness, and
inquisitiveness.
Whether in Real Estate or Yoga with the
beginners, the mix of fear, curiosity, and ambition create an ample mindset to
grow and learn. Never trap yourself into thinking you’ve been around so
long you’ve seen it all. This is where teaching, coaching, and mentoring can be
ultimately fulfilling, as well as keeping your perspective fresh through the
eyes of newbies.
So to sum up the two... Much like Yoga,
what seems difficult can become a comfortable “zone” in which you operate,
molded from repetitive and precise practice. As well, I’ve found carrying these principles into my own real estate only makes my business stronger!
